Sir James Alexander Lindsay (born August 25, 1815 – died August 13, 1874) was an important officer in the British Army. He was also a Conservative Party politician. Sir James was a member of a famous Scottish family, Clan Lindsay.
Military and Political Journey
James Lindsay was born in 1815 at Muncaster Castle. He was the second son of the Earl of Crawford. He went to Eton, a well-known school. In 1832, he joined the Grenadier Guards as an ensign. This was a very junior officer rank.
In 1845, James became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wigan. An MP is someone elected to help make laws for the country. He served as an MP until 1857. He was elected again in 1859.
By 1860, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1861, he was in charge of the Brigade of Guards in London. From 1863 to 1867, he worked as a major general in Canada. He left Parliament in 1866.
Sir James returned to command the Brigade of Guards from 1867 to 1868. He then became an inspector general for reserve forces. From 1868 to 1870, he was sent to Canada again. There, he led the British Troops. He helped organize a special force for the Red River Rebellion. This was a conflict in Canada.
In 1870, he became a lieutenant general. For his excellent work in Canada, he received a special award. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. Sir James Lindsay passed away in 1874 in Mitcham, London.
Family Life
Sir James Lindsay married Lady Sarah Elizabeth Savile in 1845. She was the daughter of the Earl of Mexborough. They had several children together:
- James Greville Lindsay, who died young.
- Reginald Dalrymple Lindsay, who also died young.
- Maud Isabella Lindsay.
- Mabel Lindsay (died 1928), who married William John Frescheville Ramsden.
- Mary Egidia Lindsay (died 1911), who married John Coutts Antrobus.
