James Louis Lindsay (1906–1997) was a British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for North Devon.
Early Life and Education
James Lindsay was born on December 16, 1906. His father was David Lindsay, 27th Earl of Crawford. His older brother was David Lindsay, the 28th Earl of Crawford.
James went to school at Eton. He then studied at Magdalen College, Oxford University.
Serving His Country
During the Second World War, James Lindsay was a Major. He served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. This was an important role during the war.
Time in Parliament
In 1955, James Lindsay was elected as an MP. An MP represents a specific area in the UK Parliament. He represented the area of North Devon. He took over from Christopher Peto.
He served for one term, from 1955 to 1959. In the 1959 election, he lost his seat. He lost by a very small number of votes. The winner was Jeremy Thorpe, a candidate from the Liberal Party. Jeremy Thorpe later became a leader of his party.
His Family Life
James Lindsay came from a family involved in politics. His nephew, Lord Balniel, also became an MP in the same election.
James married Bronwen Mary Scott-Ellis in 1933. She was the daughter of Thomas Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden.
They had three sons and one daughter:
