James Norton (born October 8, 1843 – died October 14, 1920) was an important politician from South Carolina. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was part of the United States Congress. He also held several other important roles in his home state.

Early Life and War Service
James Norton was born in 1843 near Mullins, South Carolina. He started his education, but his studies were interrupted. In 1861, when he was about 18 years old, he left school. He joined the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Norton served throughout the entire war. He was part of the Army of Northern Virginia. After the war ended in 1865, he went back to school. However, he did not complete a full degree.
A Career in Public Service
After the Civil War, James Norton began his career. From 1866 to 1870, he worked as a teacher. He taught in public schools. He also worked in farming and selling goods.
Local and State Roles
Norton started his political journey in 1870. He was elected as the county school commissioner. This meant he helped manage schools in his local area. He was re-elected to this position in 1872.
Later, he became a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served in this state-level group in 1886, 1887, 1890, and 1891. These roles helped him gain experience in state government.
Comptroller General
From 1890 to 1894, Norton worked as the assistant comptroller general of South Carolina. The comptroller general is like the state's chief accountant. This person manages the state's money and financial records. In 1894, he became the actual comptroller general. He held this important financial role until 1897. He then resigned from this position.
Serving in Congress
In 1897, James Norton was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He filled a spot that became open when another representative resigned. He was re-elected to Congress for a second term. Norton served in the U.S. House of Representatives from December 6, 1897, to March 3, 1901. He decided not to run for re-election in 1900.
Later Life
After his time in Congress, James Norton returned to South Carolina. He went back to farming. He also started working in the real estate business. This involves buying and selling land and buildings. He continued to be involved in state politics. From 1907 to 1908, he was again a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives.
James Norton passed away in Mullins, South Carolina, on October 14, 1920. He was 77 years old. He was buried in Miller's Churchyard.
