James Albert Norton (born November 11, 1843 – died July 24, 1912) was an important American figure. He was a teacher and a veteran of the American Civil War. Later, he became a U.S. Representative for Ohio. He served in this role for three terms, from 1897 to 1903.
Early Life and Military Service
James Albert Norton was born in Bettsville, Ohio. He went to local schools and later graduated from Tiffin High School.
During the American Civil War, James Norton joined the Union Army in August 1862. He served as a sergeant in the 101st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Later, he was promoted to first lieutenant. He became an adjutant for the 123rd Regiment, United States Colored Infantry, in 1864. He left the military in 1865 after the war ended.
Life After the War
After the Civil War, James Norton decided to study medicine. He started working as a doctor in Ohio in 1867. He continued this work until 1879.
He then chose to study law. He became a lawyer in 1879.
Norton also served in public office. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives from 1873 to 1879. He also led the State Democratic committee from 1887 to 1892.
From 1885 to 1892, he worked as a County auditor. He also served as a commissioner for railroads and telegraphs from 1889 to 1895. He left this job to work in the legal department of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company.
Time in Congress
James Norton was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat. He served in the Fifty-fifth, Fifty-sixth, and Fifty-seventh Congresses. His terms lasted from March 4, 1897, to March 3, 1903.
In 1902, he tried to be reelected to the Fifty-eighth Congress but was not successful. After leaving Congress, he went back to working as a lawyer for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
Death
James Albert Norton passed away on July 24, 1912, in Tiffin, Ohio. He was buried in a mausoleum at Green Lawn Cemetery.
