Mullins is a city located in Marion County, South Carolina, United States. In 2020, about 4,026 people lived there. The city was officially started on March 4, 1872. It was named after Colonel William S. Mullins. He served as a representative for Marion County in the South Carolina State Legislature for many years.

History of Mullins

On March 4, 1872, Mullins officially became a town. That same year, the Macedonia Methodist Church was built. It was the first church inside the city limits. By 1878, Mullins had only 75 people and 12 families. There were just three stores and four dirt roads. These roads were Railroad, Main, Smith, and Gapway Streets.

Tobacco and Growth

In 1894, the city of Mullins began to grow a lot. This was because of the success of growing and selling tobacco. At one point, Mullins was the biggest tobacco market in the United States. It was known as "South Carolina's Largest, The world's best tobacco market."

In the late 1920s, a special event called the tobacco festival began. This festival is still celebrated today and is known as the 'Golden Leaf Festival'. It celebrates the city's history with tobacco.

Schools in Mullins

Mullins' first school opened in 1872. Boys and girls from the town and nearby areas went there. The first school building was made of brick and built in 1904 on Academy Street. A second school building was added in 1913.

Mullins High School was built in 1923. It later burned down in 1976 but was rebuilt. McCormick Elementary School was built in 1956. The Palmetto School, which was for African American students, was built in 1919. Around 1956, it split into Palmetto Elementary and Palmetto High School. In 1970, all schools in Mullins became part of a fully integrated school system. This meant students of all races could attend the same schools.

Public Library

The public library in Mullins was started in 1910. The building that houses the library today was built in 1940. It is located at the corner of N. Main and Wine Streets.
