James Owens: A Hero of Bravery
James Owens was about 27 years old when he showed incredible bravery. At that time, he was a corporal in the 49th Regiment of Foot. A corporal is a junior leader in the army. This regiment later became known as The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's). His brave actions happened during the Crimean War.
His Courageous Act in the Crimean War
On October 30, 1854, a big battle was happening. It was the Siege of Sebastopol in the Crimean Peninsula. During this fight, Corporal Owens did something very special. He bravely faced Russian soldiers on his own. He also helped a lieutenant from his own regiment. His actions were so outstanding that he was given the Victoria Cross.
What is the Victoria Cross?
The Victoria Cross, often called the VC, is the highest military award. It is given for extreme bravery. Soldiers receive it for showing amazing courage.
