James Patton Flick (born August 28, 1845 – died February 25, 1929) was an American politician. He served two terms as a U.S. Representative for Iowa's 8th congressional district. He was a member of the Republican Party during a time known as the Gilded Age.

Early Life and Moving West

James P. Flick was born in Bakerstown, Pennsylvania. When he was seven years old, in 1852, his family moved to Wapello County, Iowa. A few years later, in 1857, they moved again to Taylor County, Iowa. James went to the local schools there.

Serving in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, James Flick joined the army. He became a private soldier in Company K of the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served in the war from April 1862 until September 1864.

Career in Law and Politics

After the war, James Flick started his career in public service. In 1869 and 1870, he worked as the Recorder for Taylor County. This job involved keeping important public records.

He then studied law and became a lawyer in 1870. He started his law practice in Bedford, Iowa. James Flick also served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1878 to 1879. This is where laws are made for the state of Iowa. From 1880 to 1886, he was a district attorney. This meant he worked as a lawyer for the government in his local area.

Time in the U.S. Congress

In 1888, James Flick was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented Iowa's 8th congressional district in Washington D.C. He served in the 51st Congress.

He was re-elected in 1890 and served in the 52nd Congress. In total, he was a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1889, to March 3, 1893. In 1892, he decided not to run for re-election.

Later Life

After leaving Congress, James Flick returned to Bedford, Iowa. He continued to work as a lawyer there. He passed away in Bedford on February 25, 1929, at the age of 83. He was buried in Bedford Cemetery.
