James Peterson's Journey
Early Life and Learning
James Peterson studied chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley. After his studies, he traveled the world. He then moved to Paris, France, a famous city for food. There, he learned cooking at a well-known school called Le Cordon Bleu.
Becoming a Chef
After his training, James worked in famous restaurants. He worked at Le Vivarois in Paris. Then, he moved to Vonnas to work at Chez La Mere Blanc, which is now called Restaurant Georges Blanc. These experiences helped him become a skilled chef.
Teaching and Writing Cookbooks
In 1979, James Peterson came back to New York City. He became a partner at a restaurant called Le Petit Robert in Greenwich Village.
From 1984, he taught cooking for four years at the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. He even wrote the advanced lessons for the students there.
His first cookbook, Sauces, came out in 1990. It was a big success! It won two awards from the James Beard Foundation: "Best Single Subject" and "Cookbook of the Year." James Peterson went on to write 14 more cookbooks. He won five more James Beard Awards, making a total of seven awards for his books. He also took almost all the photos in his books himself.
From Food to Fragrance
Since 2011, James Peterson has been exploring a new passion: perfumes! He studies them in his home laboratory. In 2011, he started his own company called Brooklyn Perfume Company.
Today, James lives in Brooklyn, New York. He continues to create new perfumes and run his small business.
