Major General James Sebastian Rawlins CB CIE (born March 18, 1823 – died October 18, 1905) was an important officer in the British Indian Army. He served during the second half of the 1800s.

Who Was James Rawlins?

James Rawlins was born in Staplegrove, England, in 1823. He went to two famous schools: Harrow School and Addiscombe Military Seminary. These schools helped him prepare for a career in the military.

Starting His Military Journey

On December 20, 1844, Rawlins joined the 44th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry. This was a part of the East India Company's army. By 1857, he had become a captain.

During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a big uprising against British rule, Rawlins faced a tough challenge. Soldiers from his own regiment rebelled. He was stuck inside Agra Fort for several months because of the fighting.

After the rebellion, his regiment was disbanded, meaning it was broken up. In 1861, Rawlins joined the new Indian Staff Corps. This was now part of the official British Indian Army. He was promoted to Major on June 10, 1863.

Leading the 1st Goorkha Regiment

In 1869, Rawlins became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He then took command of the 1st Goorkha Regiment. This was a very important role.

He led the regiment on its first trip overseas in 1875. They went to British Malaya during the Perak War. For his service there, he received a special award called the Companion of the Order of the Bath. This award recognized his bravery and leadership.

Soon after, his regiment fought in the Second Afghan War in 1878. Under Rawlins' command, they were part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade. They earned a special honor called "Afghanistan 1878–80" for their actions.

Later Achievements and Retirement

After these wars, Rawlins returned to the Staff Corps. He continued to rise through the ranks. He eventually became a Major General. For all his hard work and service, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire. This was another high honor.

After his long military career, James Rawlins retired. He moved back to England. He bought a place called Ellenborough Park near Weston-super-Mare.

In 1854, he married Emma Augusta Wilmot Parke in Bath, Somerset. They had twelve children together, including a son named Arthur Rawlins. James Sebastian Rawlins passed away on October 18, 1905.
