James Wriothesley, Lord Wriothesley (born March 1, 1605 – died November 5, 1624) was a young English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1621 to 1624.

Early Life and Education

James Wriothesley was the oldest son of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton and his wife, Elizabeth Vernon. He was born in 1605 and was baptized on March 26, 1605, in the Chapel Royal at Greenwich.

He went to Eton College, a famous school, from 1613 to 1619. After that, he started studying at St John's College, Cambridge, but he did not finish his degree there.

Royal Connections

King James I of England was James Wriothesley's godfather. When James was just eleven years old, he was made a Knight of the Bath. This special honor was given to him during a ceremony for the king's son, Charles I, who was becoming the Prince of Wales on November 4, 1616.

A Young Politician

In 1621, even though he was still a teenager, James Wriothesley was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Callington. He served in this role until 1622.

In 1624, he was elected again as a Member of Parliament, this time for Winchester. This time period was known as the Happy Parliament. James Wriothesley died when he was only 19 years old. Because he died so young, he might hold the record for being the shortest-serving Member of Parliament in the history of the Parliament of England.

Military Service and Final Days

After his last election, James Wriothesley joined the military. He became a Captain in an English army group. This group was led by his father and was fighting in the Eighty Years War to support the Elector Palatine, who was King James's son-in-law.

Sadly, James Wriothesley became sick with a fever and died in Roosendaal, Netherlands. This happened on November 5, 1624. His father also died just five days later. Both were buried together at Titchfield on December 28, 1624.
