Jamestown Mall was a large indoor shopping mall located in Florissant, Missouri. It first opened its doors in 1973. Over the years, it was home to several big department stores, known as anchor stores, including Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, and Sears. However, starting in the early 2000s, more and more stores became empty. The mall officially closed in July 2014. There are now plans to turn the area into a new kind of shopping and community space.

History of Jamestown Mall

Construction on Jamestown Mall began in 1972. When it first opened, its main stores were Sears and Stix Baer & Fuller. Stix Baer & Fuller was a local department store chain from nearby St. Louis.

Changes in Anchor Stores

In 1984, Dillard's bought the Stix Baer & Fuller chain. Because of this, the Stix store at Jamestown Mall became a Dillard's. Later, in 1994, another big store called Famous-Barr was added as a third anchor. Famous-Barr is now known as Macy's.

Just two years later, in 1996, JCPenney moved its store from another location in Florissant to Jamestown Mall. During the 1990s, a movie theater was also built at the mall, giving people more reasons to visit.

Decline and Closure

In 2003, the company that owned the mall, Jacobs Group, sold it to Carlyle Development Group. At this time, about 30 percent of the mall's stores were empty. In April 2006, Dillard's announced that its store at Jamestown Mall would close. Two years later, in 2008, the Sears store also closed.

Carlyle Development Group shared plans in 2008 to update the mall. They thought about turning the old Dillard's store into offices and closing that part of the mall to other shops. In 2009, St. Louis County asked experts to study if the mall could still work as a shopping center. The study found that the mall was no longer a good place for shopping because there were already many other stores in the area. These plans were later canceled.

New plans in 2010 suggested tearing down most of the mall, keeping only the JCPenney and Macy's stores. The rest of the area would be rebuilt as a place with different uses, like homes and businesses. In June 2011, a furniture store called Central States Liquidation opened in the space that used to be Dillard's. The JCPenney Outlet store, which changed its name to JC's 5 Star Outlet, closed in late 2013.

Towards the end of 2012, the mall's gas service was temporarily turned off, but it was later restored. However, in November 2013, it was announced that the mall would close because the heating system was shut off. In January 2014, the Macy's store announced its closure, meaning the mall no longer had any major anchor stores. Jamestown Mall officially closed its doors on July 1, 2014.
