Jamie Allison's Hockey Career
Starting in Junior Hockey
Jamie Allison began his hockey journey in junior leagues. In 1991, he was picked 7th overall by the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL Priority Draft. The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) is a major junior ice hockey league in Canada.
After his first season, Jamie was traded to the Detroit Junior Red Wings. He became the team captain for the 1994-95 season. That year, he helped his team win the J. Ross Robertson Cup, which means they were the OHL champions! They even made it to the final game of the 1995 Memorial Cup, a big tournament for junior teams, but they lost to the Kamloops Blazers.
Playing as a Professional
Jamie was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 1993. This meant they had the rights to sign him to play for their team. He made his first appearance in the NHL with the Flames during the 1994–95 season.
Over his career, Jamie played for many NHL teams. He played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and Florida Panthers.
Here's a fun fact about his career: On December 13, 2005, while playing for the Nashville Predators, their main goalie got hurt just before a game. Since Jamie was not scheduled to play that night, he actually dressed up as the backup goalie! This meant he was ready to play goalie if needed, even though he was a defenceman.
In 2006, Jamie signed with the Ottawa Senators. He played his final season with their minor league team, the Binghamton Senators, in the American Hockey League (AHL). Overall, Jamie played in 372 NHL games over 11 seasons. He scored 7 goals and had 23 assists. He was also known for his tough play, earning 639 penalty minutes.
After Retiring from Playing
After he stopped playing professional hockey in 2007, Jamie Allison continued to be involved in the sport. He became an assistant coach for the Brampton Battalion in the OHL.
As of 2024, Jamie works as the Youth Hockey Operations Manager at the Baptist Health IcePlex. This is the training facility for the Florida Panthers team. He helps manage hockey programs for young players.
