Early Life and Education
Jamie Gauthier was born in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia. Her father, Leon Williams, ran for District Attorney of Philadelphia two times.
She studied Accounting at Temple University and earned a bachelor's degree. Later, she received a master's degree in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Before getting her master's degree, she worked as an accountant for two years at a company called DuPont.
Community Work and Leadership
Jamie Gauthier started an organization called Mommy Grads. This group helped single mothers raise their children while they were attending college.
She also worked as a program officer for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation. From 2013 to 2017, she was the executive director of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia. In 2017, she became the executive director of the Fairmount Park Conservancy. This organization helps care for Philadelphia's parks.
Serving on the Philadelphia City Council
In January 2019, Jamie Gauthier announced she would run for a seat on the Philadelphia City Council. She challenged the person who had held the seat for a long time, Jannie Blackwell. The Third District, which Gauthier wanted to represent, covers much of West Philadelphia and Southwest Philadelphia.
Jannie Blackwell had represented this district since 1992. Her husband, Lucien Blackwell, held the seat for 17 years before her. In the May 2019 primary election, Gauthier won against Blackwell. She received 56% of the votes, while Blackwell received 44%. This was seen as a big surprise in Philadelphia politics. Gauthier did not have any opponents in the general election.
In 2024, Gauthier suggested a new law to allow a 104-apartment building to be built. This building would offer affordable homes at 50th and Warrington Streets. This plan came after some local residents had stopped the development.
Personal Life
Jamie Gauthier lives in the Kingsessing neighborhood. She lives there with her two sons. Her sister, Samantha Williams, worked for another City Council member, Curtis Jones Jr.. In 2023, Samantha Williams was elected as a Judge for Philadelphia's Court of Common Pleas.
