College Football Journey
Playing for Wake Forest
Jamie Newman started his college football journey at Wake Forest in 2016. He spent his first year as a "redshirt" player, which means he practiced but didn't play in games. This allowed him to gain experience without using up a year of his college eligibility.
In 2017, he was a backup quarterback. He completed two passes for eight yards. In 2018, he again started as a backup. However, he became the starter for the last four games after the main quarterback got hurt. Newman played very well in the 2018 Birmingham Bowl. He threw for 328 yards and scored a touchdown, earning him the MVP award for that game.
For the 2018 season, he completed 84 passes for 1,083 yards. He also threw nine touchdowns and four interceptions. In 2019, he won the starting quarterback job for Wake Forest. He continued to improve his skills on the field.
Transferring to Georgia
In January 2020, Jamie Newman announced that he would transfer to the University of Georgia. He planned to play for the Georgia Bulldogs for his final year of college eligibility.
However, in September of that year, Newman made a big decision. He announced that he would not play in the 2020 season. This was due to his concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, Jamie Newman did not play any games for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Professional Football Career
With the Philadelphia Eagles
After college, Jamie Newman hoped to play in the NFL. He was not chosen in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent on May 14, 2021. This means a team signed him even though he wasn't drafted. Unfortunately, he was released by the Eagles on June 9, 2021, before the season began.
Playing in Canada: Hamilton Tiger-Cats
On February 6, 2022, Jamie Newman signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This team plays in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He scored his first touchdown in the CFL on July 28, 2022, against the Montréal Alouettes.
Newman got his first chance to start a CFL game on September 5, 2022. This happened because the regular starting quarterback had an injured shoulder. In his first start, Newman completed 14 of 25 passes for 171 yards. He also threw one interception. The Tiger-Cats lost that game to their rivals, the Toronto Argonauts, with a score of 28–8.
