Playing Football in College
Dane Evans was a talented quarterback at Tulsa University. In 2014, as a sophomore, he threw for over 3,100 yards. The next year, in 2015, he completed 305 passes for an amazing 4,332 yards and 25 touchdowns. This made him one of the top college quarterbacks in the country. In his senior year, he continued to play well, throwing for 3,348 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Professional Football Career
After his college career, Dane Evans hoped to play in the NFL.
Philadelphia Eagles
Even though he wasn't chosen in the 2017 NFL Draft, Evans signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in June 2017. This meant he joined their team for a short time. However, he was released from the team in September 2017.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
In October 2017, Evans joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. He started on their practice team, which is like a training squad. By November, he was moved to the main team.
His first start in a CFL game was in November 2018. He threw for 315 yards. He finished that season playing in three games, throwing for 383 yards and two touchdowns.
In 2019, Evans signed a new contract. He began the season as the backup quarterback. This means he was ready to play if the main quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, couldn't. In Week 7, Masoli got hurt, and Evans stepped in. He led the Tiger-Cats to a win, helping them get to first place. It turned out Masoli had a serious injury and would miss the rest of the season. This meant Evans became the starting quarterback.
Evans started 11 of the last 12 games that season. He completed 298 passes for 3,754 yards and 21 touchdowns. He had a great record as a starter, winning 9 out of 11 games. He led the Tiger-Cats to win their division. In his first playoff game, he played very well, helping his team reach the 107th Grey Cup, which is the CFL championship game. However, the Tiger-Cats lost the championship to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 2020 CFL season was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time, Evans worked as a coach's assistant at the University of North Texas.
In 2021, Evans started as the backup again. He became the starter in Week 4. He got injured in Week 6 and missed several weeks. When he returned, he helped the Tiger-Cats win their last regular season game. In the Eastern Final playoff game, he replaced Masoli again and played perfectly, completing all 16 of his passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. This led Hamilton to another Grey Cup appearance. Evans was named the starter for the 108th Grey Cup. Sadly, he got injured in the second quarter and had to leave the game. The Tiger-Cats lost in overtime.
In January 2022, Dane Evans signed a two-year contract to stay with Hamilton. He started the 2022 season as the main quarterback. He dealt with a shoulder injury during the season. By the end of 2022, the team decided to make a change. In early 2023, Hamilton signed another experienced quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell. This made Evans's future with the team uncertain.
BC Lions
On February 23, 2023, Evans was traded to the BC Lions. He agreed to a new contract, knowing he would be competing for the backup quarterback spot behind Vernon Adams Jr. In Week 6, Adams got injured, and Evans came off the bench to help the Lions win. He started the next two games while Adams recovered. In 2023, he played in 16 games, starting two of them. He completed 71 passes for 829 yards, with four touchdowns and six interceptions. On January 1, 2024, Dane Evans announced he was retiring from professional football.
Personal Life
Dane Evans has Native American heritage. He belongs to the Wichita tribe. His great-grandmother, Doris McLemore, was the very last person who could speak the Wichita language fluently.
