Jamshid bin Abdullah Al Busaidi (born September 16, 1929 – died December 30, 2024) was a royal from Zanzibar. He was the very last Sultan of Zanzibar. A sultan is like a king or ruler. He lost his power during an event called the Zanzibar Revolution. This happened after the United Kingdom stopped protecting Zanzibar.
Biography
Jamshid bin Abdullah ruled Zanzibar from July 1, 1963, to January 12, 1964. Before this, the United Kingdom had protected Zanzibar. On December 10, 1963, the UK stopped its protection. Zanzibar then became an independent country. It was a constitutional monarchy, meaning the Sultan was the head of state, but a constitution limited his powers. Zanzibar was also part of the Commonwealth.
However, this new situation did not last long. Without the UK's protection, Sultan Jamshid was soon overthrown. This happened during the Zanzibar Revolution. Most people in Zanzibar were African, and they wanted a different government.
After the revolution, Sultan Jamshid had to leave Zanzibar. He first went to Oman, but he was not allowed to stay there permanently. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom. He settled in Portsmouth with his wife and children.
His children and siblings were allowed to move to Oman in the 1980s. But the Omani government kept saying no to Jamshid's requests to join them. They said it was for security reasons. This changed in September 2020. Jamshid had lived in the UK for more than 50 years. The new Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, finally allowed him to return. He went back to his family's homeland as a member of the Al Bu Said royal family. He was not a ruling Sultan anymore.
Jamshid bin Abdullah died on December 30, 2024. He was buried in the Royal Cemetery in Muscat, Oman.
