Jan Hendrik Scholten (born Johannes Heinrich Scholten) was an important Dutch Protestant theologian. He was born on August 17, 1811, in Vleuten, near Utrecht. He passed away on April 10, 1885, in Leiden.

About Jan Hendrik Scholten

Jan Hendrik Scholten studied at Utrecht University. In 1840, he became a professor of theology at Franeker. Later, in 1843, he moved to Leiden University. There, he became a special professor and then a full professor in 1845.

Scholten helped inspire Abraham Kuenen to study theology. At first, Scholten was not as radical in his religious ideas as he later became. Over time, Scholten and Kuenen started a new way of thinking about religion. This movement was similar to the "Tübingen School" in Germany. It led to a new approach that focused more on human reason and less on traditional supernatural beliefs.

His Important Works

Scholten first studied how religious beliefs were formed and the philosophy behind them. He wrote a major work called Principles of the Theology of the Reformed Church. This book was published in two parts between 1848 and 1850.

Later, he focused on the New Testament part of the Bible. He wrote A Critical Study of the Gospel of John in 1864. This book was also translated into German.

Some of his other important books include:

  • Historical and Critical Introduction to the New Testament (1853–1856)
  • The Oldest Witnesses to the Writings of the New Testament (1866)
  • The Oldest Gospel (1868)
  • The Pauline Gospel (1870)
  • A Comparative View of Religions

Scholten wrote about how his own religious ideas changed over time. He shared this in a speech when he retired from teaching in 1881. Abraham Kuenen also wrote a biography about him in 1885.
