Jan Karafiát (born January 4, 1846 – died January 31, 1929) was a Czech clergyman and a beloved author. He is most famous for his classic children's book called Broučci. This Czech word means "little beetles" or "fireflies." The book was first published in the early 1870s. Many traditional Czech figurines of fairy-like insect people are based on the characters from his book. Karafiát also wrote poetry, which often showed his strong religious beliefs. He even helped review the Bible kralická, which was the first Czech Protestant translation of the Bible.

Early Life and Education

Jan Karafiát was born into a well-known family in Jimramov in 1846. He started his schooling in Gütersloh, a town in Germany. He was very interested in religion and decided to study theology. Theology is the study of religious faith and practice.

He studied in several different cities across Europe. These included Litomyšl in the Czech Republic, Berlin (from 1866 to 1867), Bonn (from 1867 to 1868), and Vienna (from 1866 to 1869). He also spent time studying in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1871 to 1872.

His Work as a Clergyman

After his studies, Jan Karafiát became a Vicar in Roudnice nad Labem. A vicar is a type of church leader. Later, he became the administrator of a Protestant theological school in Čáslav. This meant he helped manage the school.

From 1874, he led the church parish in Hrubá Lhota. He stayed there until 1895. At that time, he had a disagreement with the church leaders in Vienna. After this, he moved to Prague. He lived in Prague until he passed away in 1929. Jan Karafiát was buried in Vinohrady Cemetery.
