Johannes Andries “Jan” Kruis (born June 8, 1933 – died January 19, 2017) was a famous Dutch comics artist. He was best known for his popular family comic strip, Jack, Jacky and the Juniors. This comic was also known as Jan, Jans en de Kinderen in Dutch.

Who Was Jan Kruis?
Jan Kruis was a talented artist who loved creating comics. He started drawing them when he was just a child. Later, he even worked for Marten Toonder, another important Dutch comics pioneer.
His Early Life and Career
Jan Kruis began his own comics career by drawing a comic called Prins Freddie. This comic appeared in a magazine named De Havenloods. He also created a funny comic called Gregor. It was published in the famous magazine Tintin between 1965 and 1966. Later, Gregor was printed again in another magazine called Pep.
In 1969, Jan Kruis took over drawing the comic Sjors en Sjimmie. He made the characters more modern. He also changed how Sjimmie, one of the characters, looked. Another artist, Jan Steeman, later took over this series.
Creating Famous Comics
Jan Kruis became very famous for his comic series Jack, Jacky and the Juniors. These were one-page comics that showed funny family moments. The comic first appeared in a women's magazine called Libelle on December 12, 1970.
Jack, Jacky and the Juniors was also popular in other countries. In Switzerland, it appeared in a magazine for kids and teenagers called Spick. In Germany, it was published for a while as "Ulli, Ulla und die Kinder" in the magazine Favorit.
Besides comics, Jan Kruis was also a busy illustrator. He drew pictures for novels, magazines, advertisements, and even record covers.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1996, Jan Kruis received a special award called the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a very important honor in the Netherlands. He retired from drawing comics two years later, in 1998.
His daughter, Andrea Kruis, has also become a comics artist. She has followed in her father's footsteps. In 2013, Jan Kruis's career was celebrated with a special magazine. This magazine included some comics that had never been published before.
Jan Kruis passed away in his hometown of Mantinge, in the Drenthe region of the Netherlands. He was 83 years old. His family shared the sad news with the public on January 20, 2017.
