About Jan Malmsjö
Jan Malmsjö was born in Lund, Sweden. He studied acting at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy from 1950 to 1953. One of his first roles on a big stage was playing Paris in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in 1953.
Early Acting Roles
In 1966, Jan Malmsjö appeared in two episodes of the World War II TV show Combat!. He played Bruener in "Sudden Terror" and Captain Krauss in "The Chapel at Able Five." In the same year, he was also in the spy series Blue Light, playing Ilya W. Vorchek.
Stage and Musical Career
Jan Malmsjö is known for his wide range as an actor. He has played many different characters, from serious roles like Hamlet in Shakespeare's Hamlet (1974) to Henry Higgins in the musical My Fair Lady. He also starred in other popular musicals like La Cage aux Folles and Victor/Victoria.
He has also recorded several music albums in Sweden. His Swedish version of "Willkommen," called Välkomna till Cabaret, is very famous. This song was from the successful production of Cabaret in 1970, where Malmsjö played the Emcee.
Film and Voice Acting
Jan Malmsjö has acted in movies from time to time. One of his most well-known film roles was as Bishop Edvard Vergérus in Ingmar Bergman's movie Fanny and Alexander (1982).
He also voiced Lumiere, the charming candelabra, in the Swedish version of Disney's animated movie Beauty and the Beast.
Recent Work
In December 2007, Malmsjö was part of the Swedish reality show Stjärnorna på slottet (Stars at the Castle). He appeared alongside other famous people like Peter Stormare and Britt Ekland.
In 2017, at 85 years old, he was still acting. He was rehearsing for the main role in Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Beckett at Stockholm's Royal Dramatic Theatre. In early 2019, he competed in Melodifestivalen 2019 with the song "Leva Livet." This show helps choose Sweden's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. He had last appeared in the show fifty years before.
Family Life
Jan Malmsjö is married to Marie Göranzon, who is also an actress at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Their son, Jonas Malmsjö, followed in their footsteps and became an actor too. Jonas even acted alongside his father in a play called The Ghost Sonata in 2000.
