Jana Tichá (born in 1965 in České Budějovice, a city in the Czech Republic) is a famous Czech astronomer. An astronomer is a scientist who studies stars, planets, and everything else in space! She is also known for discovering many minor planets.
Jana Tichá went to the University of Economics in Prague and finished her studies in 1987. In 1992, she became the director of the Kleť Observatory. This is a special place where scientists watch and study space.
She loves finding asteroids and comets. Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun, and comets are icy bodies that can have long tails. She is especially interested in objects that come close to Earth, called near-Earth objects (NEOs). The Minor Planet Center, which keeps track of all minor planets, says she discovered 104 of them between 1995 and 2003!
Jana Tichá is also the head of a group called the IAU Committee on Small Body Nomenclature (CSBN). This group is in charge of approving the names for asteroids and other small space objects. She works closely with her husband, Miloš Tichý, at the Kleť Observatory.
In the Czech Republic, Jana Tichá is well-known for making astronomy fun and easy to understand for everyone. She writes a lot for Czech websites about asteroids and comets, helping more people learn about space.
In 1996, an asteroid was named after her! It's called 5757 Tichá. How cool is that? She also got to name one of her own discoveries, a main-belt asteroid called 8307 Peltan, after members of her family.
Discovering Minor Planets
Jana Tichá has discovered many minor planets. These are small objects in our solar system, like asteroids, that orbit the Sun. She has found over 100 of them! Each discovery helps us learn more about space and our solar system.
Here are a few examples of the minor planets she discovered:
- 7441 Láska (discovered on July 30, 1995)
- 7493 Hirzo (discovered on October 24, 1995)
- 8307 Peltan (discovered on March 5, 1995) – This one she named after her family!
- 10234 Sixtygarden (discovered on December 27, 1997)
- 11105 Puchnarová (discovered on October 24, 1995)
- 16709 Auratian (discovered on September 29, 1995)
- 18456 Mišík (discovered on March 8, 1995)
- 19384 Winton (discovered on February 6, 1998)
- 52665 Brianmay (discovered on January 30, 1998) – Yes, like the guitarist from Queen!
- 91007 Ianfleming (discovered on January 30, 1998) – Named after the author of James Bond!
She also made some discoveries together with her husband, Miloš Tichý. Their teamwork helps us explore the universe even more!
