Janakinath Bose (in Bengali: জানকীনাথ বসু) was an important Indian lawyer. He was born on May 28, 1860, and passed away on December 2, 1934. He is most famous for being the father of two well-known sons: Subhas Chandra Bose, a key leader in India's fight for freedom, and Sarat Chandra Bose, who was also a respected lawyer.

Early Life and Family

Janakinath Bose was born in the village of Kodalia on May 28, 1860. He was the fourth son of Haranath Bose. His family, the Bose family of Mahinagar, had a long history. While his family traditionally followed a faith called Shaktism, his father, Haranath Bose, was a strong follower of Vaishnavism. The old gate of their family home still stands today.

Education Journey

Janakinath Bose started his education at Albert School in Kolkata, where he passed his entrance exam in December 1877. He then went on to study at the Scottish Church College and Ravenshaw College, where he earned his degree. After that, he studied law at the University of Calcutta.

During his college days, he was a schoolmate of the famous chemist Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray. Janakinath also spent some time at St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta before joining the General Assembly Institution (now Scottish Church College). Later, he moved to Cuttack with his older half-brother, Debendra Nath, and joined Ravenshaw College in August 1879. He did very well, passing his FA exam with high marks and earning a scholarship.

He continued his studies and received his B.A. degree in 1882. He then completed his B.L. (Bachelor of Law) degree in early 1884. During this time, he met important figures from the Brahmo Samaj, a social and religious reform movement. He also worked as a lecturer at Albert College in 1883 and was a headmaster at Joynagar Institution for about nine months in 1884.

Career as a Lawyer

While living in Calcutta, Janakinath Bose was greatly inspired by the leaders of the Brahmo Samaj. In 1885, he began his law career in the court of Cuttack, where he became a successful advocate. He was appointed as a Government Pleader, which is a lawyer who represents the government. He was also given the title of Rai Bahadur, a special honor, but he later gave it up as a form of protest.

His work as a lawyer allowed him to meet many important religious and political figures involved in the Indian independence movement. He shared many of his strong beliefs and values with his ninth son, Subhas, from a very young age.

Family Life

Janakinath Bose was the son of Haranath Bose and Kamini Bose. He had several brothers: Jadu Nath Bose, Kedar Nath Bose, Debendra Nath Bose, Tara Prasanna Bose, and Surya Prasanna Bose.

He was married to Prabhabati Dutt. Together, they had 14 children: eight sons and six daughters. Prabhabati played a very important role in making sure all their children received a good education. Among their children were the famous brothers Sarat Chandra Bose and Subhas Chandra Bose.
