Jane Younger (1863–1955) was a talented Scottish artist. She was well-known for her beautiful watercolour paintings and detailed embroidery work.

Early Life and Education

Jane Younger was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1863. Her family was quite wealthy and worked in the cotton trade.

She loved art from a young age. Jane studied at the famous Glasgow School of Art for ten years. This was a long time to learn and practice her skills! After that, in 1900, she joined a special school for animal painting. She also traveled to Paris, France, to study art there. She learned at the studio of Gustave Courtois and at the École des Beaux-Arts.

While still a student, Jane became a member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. This group helped women artists share their work.

Artistic Career and Collaborations

Jane Younger often worked with her family. Her sister, Anna, married a publisher named Walter Blackie. His company was called Blackie and Son.

When Walter Blackie decided to build a new home, Hill House in Helensburgh, he hired a famous architect. This architect was Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Jane Younger was asked to help design things for the house. She created special bedspreads. She also painted a lovely watercolour picture of the house's garden. This painting became part of the house's interior design.

Jane also designed unique bookplates for Blackie and Son. These were special designs for the inside covers of their Prize Books. In 1902, Jane visited Switzerland. She also showed her art at an exhibition in Turin, Italy.

Sharing a Studio

Between 1906 and 1922, Jane Younger shared an art studio in Glasgow. She worked alongside two other artists, Annie French and Bessie Young.

Later in her life, Jane moved to Edinburgh. However, she still loved to paint in other places. She painted on the Isle of Arran and also in France.

Artistic Style and Exhibitions

Jane Younger mostly used watercolours for her paintings. She developed a very bright and bold style. Her technique was sometimes compared to pointillism. This is an art style where tiny dots of color are used to create an image. When you look at it from far away, the dots blend together.

Jane's art was shown in many important places. She exhibited her work with several famous art societies. These included the Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of Women Artists. She also showed her art at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Her paintings were displayed at the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. Other galleries, like the Cooling Galleries and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, also held exhibitions of her work.

Jane Younger passed away in 1955 in Crawford, South Lanarkshire. She designed her own gravestone. It marks the Younger family tomb in the Glasgow Necropolis.
