History of Janes Island State Park
Janes Island State Park was officially created in 1963. This means it has been a protected natural area for over 60 years!
How the Park Grew and Developed
Between 1965 and 1978, the Maryland General Assembly (which is like Maryland's government) approved a lot of money – about $1,000,000 – to help the park grow. This money was used for two main things:
- Buying More Land: They bought more land to make the park bigger.
- Making Improvements: They also used the money to build things like camping areas and picnic spots. They even worked on stopping coastal erosion, which is when the land near the water gets worn away.
