History of Janesville
Fort Janesville
In 1860, settlers in the area built a special fort called Fort Janesville. This happened after a conflict called the Paiute War. The settlers wanted to protect themselves from possible attacks by Native Americans. The fort had strong walls and a special lookout tower. Even though no attack happened, the fort was an important place for safety. Today, the spot where the fort stood is a California Historic Landmark. This means it is a special place that helps us remember history.
In 1864, Janesville almost became the main town, or "county seat," for Lassen County. However, it lost to Susanville by just one vote! The Janesville post office first opened in 1861. It later changed its name to Lassen in 1914, but then changed back to Janesville in 1923. The town was named after Jane Bankhead, who was the wife of one of the first people to settle there.
