Janet is a very small community called a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada. It is part of Rocky View County. You can find Janet about 13 kilometers (8 miles) east of downtown Calgary. It is also close to the City of Chestermere. Janet is mainly an industrial area. This means it has businesses that focus on things like transportation and moving goods.
A Look Back in Time
Janet started as a stop for trains. The Canadian National Railway built a "siding" here in 1912. A siding is a short track next to the main one. It lets trains pull over so others can pass. They also built a "flag station." This was a simple stop where trains would only stop if someone waved a flag.
It is thought that the Harry Whittaker family were among the first people to settle in Janet. Mr. Whittaker built a house about 200 meters (656 feet) from the train crossing. Later, in 1928, the Columbia Grain Co. built a large building called an elevator. This elevator was used to store grain. They rented it to another company called Parrish & Heimbecker. The building kept the Columbia name for many years.
Janet's Changing Borders
In the mid-2000s, the City of Calgary thought about adding Janet to its city limits. This process is called "annexation." It means one area takes over another. Even though Janet was not included in the annexation that happened on July 31, 2007, Calgary's city limits moved much closer.
Calgary's border moved 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) to the west of Janet. It also moved 0.8 kilometers (0.5 miles) to the north. Janet is still an important industrial area for Rocky View County.
Who Lives in Janet?
The number of people living in a place is called its "demographics." According to a special count done in 2006, only one person lived in Janet. This count was part of the 2006 municipal census by Rocky View County.
