Janet Daby is a British politician who works for the Labour Party. She has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Lewisham East since 2018. Since July 2024, she has also been a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families. This means she helps make decisions about children and families in the government.

Early Life and Education

Janet Daby was born on 15 December 1970. Her parents came to the UK from Guyana and Jamaica. She went to Blackheath Bluecoat School in Greenwich.

After school, Janet studied at Brunel University. She earned a degree there. Later, she got another degree from the London School of Economics.

Helping Communities

Before becoming a politician, Janet worked with volunteers and helped children in social care. She was a manager for fostering services. In 2013, she started a project called the Whitefoot and Downham Community Food + Project. This project helps people in her local area.

Janet Daby began her political career in local government.

Working for Lewisham Council

In 2010, Janet was elected as a councillor for the Lewisham Council. She represented the Whitefoot area. She was re-elected in 2014 and 2018. During her time on the council, she also served as the deputy mayor of the London Borough of Lewisham. She left the council in March 2019 to focus on her work as an MP.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In May 2018, Janet Daby was chosen to be the Labour Party's candidate for the 2018 Lewisham East by-election.

First Election to Parliament

Janet was elected as the MP for Lewisham East in June 2018. She won with more than half of the votes. At that time, she promised to work to keep the UK closely linked with Europe's trade agreements.

Re-election and New Roles

In the 2019 general election, Janet Daby was re-elected as MP for Lewisham East. She received even more votes this time.

In April 2020, she was given a new role as a "shadow minister" for Faiths. This meant she was part of the Labour Party's team that checks on the government's work. In July 2020, she also became a shadow minister for Women and Equalities.

She later stepped down from these roles in December 2020. She apologized for some comments she had made.

Current Parliamentary Work

Janet Daby was re-elected again in the 2024 general election. She continues to be the MP for Lewisham East.

She is also a member of a group called Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East.

Personal Life

Janet Daby married Donald Daby in 2003. They have a son and a daughter.
