Early Life and Learning
Janet Taylor Pickett was born in 1948 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She studied fine art at the University of Michigan, where she earned both her first and second degrees. She also learned art at other famous schools like the Vermont Studio Center, Parsons School of Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Her Art and Career
Janet Taylor Pickett uses many different ways to make art. She creates sculptures, installations (art that fills a space), paintings, and collages (art made by gluing different materials together). Her art is inspired by her life as an African American woman. She also taught art for 30 years at Essex County College in New Jersey. She once said, "My Blackness is a clear statement in my work." This means her identity is a very important part of her art.
In 1986, Janet Taylor Pickett's art was shown in a group exhibition called Progressions: Cultural Legacy. This show took place at MoMA PS1, a famous art museum in New York.
