Janet Taylor Pickett, born on August 13, 1948, is an American artist. She creates amazing art using different materials, called mixed media. Her artwork often shares stories about her life as an African American woman.

Growing Up and Learning Art

Janet Taylor Pickett grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She studied art at the University of Michigan, where she earned both her first and second degrees in fine art. She also learned art at other famous schools. These included the Vermont Studio Center, Parsons School of Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Janet Taylor Pickett's Art Career

Janet Taylor Pickett uses many different ways to make her art. She creates sculptures, which are 3D artworks. She also makes installations, which are art pieces set up in a space. Her work includes paintings, assemblages (art made from different objects), and collages (art made by gluing things together).

Her art is inspired by her life as an African American woman. She also learned a lot from teaching for 30 years at Essex County College in New Jersey. In 1986, Janet Taylor Pickett's art was shown in a group exhibition. This show was called Progressions: Cultural Legacy. It took place at MoMA PS1, a famous art museum in New York.
