About Janice Tanton

Early Life and Education

Janice Tanton was born on October 25, 1961. She grew up in Oshawa, Ontario. After high school, she studied acting at the University of Windsor. She also graduated from the Graphic Design Program at Durham College.

Career in Arts

Janice always loved the arts. She worked in theatre and graphic design. In 1989, she started her own company. It focused on publishing and designing art. She sold her art across Canada and the United States. She even ran two art galleries in Ontario.

Janice was also involved in business. She attended a special meeting for businesswomen in 1999. From 1996 to 2006, she was a creative director. She also illustrated popular plate series. In 2010, Janice helped start the Corridor Collective Studio and Gallery. This was a place for artists to work together.

Her Art and Studio

Janice Tanton now lives in Canmore, Alberta. She has her own art studio there. She often teaches and guides other Canadian artists. She also helps with youth arts programs. Janice mainly creates her art using oil paints.

Awards and Special Honours

Moving to Alberta

In 2005, Janice moved to Canmore, Alberta with her family. She worked at The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. There, she managed programs for Indigenous Leadership.

Blackfoot Adoption

In 2008, something very special happened. Elder Tom Crane Bear of Siksika First Nation designed a tipi. This tipi marked the 75th Anniversary of The Banff Centre. Janice and her family were part of a special ceremony. Blackfoot Elders adopted Janice and her family. She was given a Blackfoot name, "Iniskimaki." This means "Buffalo Stone Woman."

Recognitions

In 2008, Durham College honored Janice. They named her an Alumnus of Distinction. The next year, she received a grant. This grant was from the Canada Council for the Arts. It helped her create The Community Fusion Project.
