Janine Sutto (born 20 April 1921 – died 28 March 2017) was a very famous actress and comedian. She was born in France but became a Canadian citizen. She was known for her long career in radio, on stage, and in films and television.
Her Life and Career
Janine Sutto was born in Paris, France. In 1930, when she was nine years old, her family moved to Canada. They settled in the city of Montreal.
When Janine was just 14, she started acting in radio dramas. These were like plays you could only hear on the radio. Later, she also performed on stage in plays.
Starting in Theatre
In 1943, Janine Sutto helped start a theatre group called the Théâtre de l'Equipe. She loved acting on stage and continued to perform with another group, Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, into the early 1950s.
Movies and TV
Janine Sutto also appeared in many films and television shows. She was in over 75 different productions! Her very first movie was The Music Master (also known as Le Père Chopin), which came out in 1945.
Her Biography
In 2010, a book about her life was published. It was called Vivre avec le destin, which means Living with Destiny. Her son-in-law, Jean-François Lépine, wrote the book.
Janine Sutto passed away in March 2017 in Montreal. She was 95 years old.
Awards and Honours
Janine Sutto received many important awards for her amazing work.
- In 1986, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. This is one of Canada's highest honours.
- In 1991, she was promoted to a Companion of the Order of Canada, an even higher rank.
- In 1998, she was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. This is a top honour from the province of Quebec.
- In May 2014, Janine Sutto received a special Governor General's Performing Arts Award. This award is given for a lifetime of artistic achievement and recognized her huge contribution to Canadian theatre.
