Jann Turner (born 1964) is a talented South African film director, novelist, television director, and screenwriter. She is known for her work behind the camera and for the stories she tells in books and on screen. Her first big movie as a director was White Wedding in 2009.
Who is Jann Turner?
Jann Turner was born in 1964. Her parents were Rick Turner, who was a university professor and spoke out against Apartheid (a system of unfair racial separation in South Africa), and Barbara Hubbard, who later became a politician.
Early Life and Education
When Jann was thirteen years old, her father was sadly killed. At that time, her parents were already divorced. Jann and her younger sister, Kim, grew up mostly in Cape Town, South Africa, with their mother.
Just three months after her father's death, their family had to leave South Africa. This was because they faced threats from the government, which could have "banned" them. Being banned meant they would be stopped from doing many things and might even be forced to leave the country.
The family moved to Britain. Jann finished her schooling there and later studied in the United States. She went to Oxford University in Britain and the Tisch School of the Arts in the U.S.
Career in Film and TV
Before she started directing films, Jann Turner worked as an editor. She helped put together special television shows for the National Geographic Society. She also directed and produced many episodes of TV shows in South Africa.
Later, Jann moved to Los Angeles, California, where she lives with her two children. In Los Angeles, she has directed episodes for several popular TV series. These include The Big C, Emily Owens, M.D., The Carrie Diaries, and 9-1-1.
As a Writer
Besides directing, Jann Turner is also a successful novelist. She has written three novels: Heartland, Southern Cross, and Home Is Where You Find It. She has also worked as a writer for television. One of the shows she wrote for was the popular teen drama Teen Wolf.
