Janvrin Island is a small Canadian island. It is located just off the coast of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. This island is part of Richmond County.
Discover Janvrin Island
Janvrin Island got its name from the family of John Janvrin. He was a merchant trader from Jersey, which is one of the Channel Islands. A merchant trader is someone who buys and sells goods to make money.
The island is connected by a bridge to its neighbour, Isle Madame. This makes it easy to travel between the two islands.
A Special Place for the Mi'kmaq People
Long ago, Janvrin Island was a very important place for the Mi'kmaq people. They are one of the Indigenous groups of Canada. The Mi'kmaq used the island as a summer hunting ground.
They especially valued the island for its white-skinned deer. These deer thrived there, making the island a rich hunting area. Because of these special deer, the Mi'kmaq called it "The Isle of the White Stag."
Amazing Tides and White Cliffs
Janvrin Island is also famous for having some of the highest tides in the world. Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels. This is caused by the pull of the Moon and Sun.
You can see clear signs of water erosion on the island's white cliffs. Water erosion happens when water slowly wears away rocks and soil. This process has shaped the cliffs over many years.
