Band History
How Japandroids Started
Brian King and David Prowse formed the band in 2006. They first met in 2000 while studying at the University of Victoria. They both loved music and often went to live shows together.
In 2003, Prowse moved to Vancouver. After King finished university in 2005, he also moved to Vancouver. They then decided to start a band together. They began writing music in 2006. The band's name, Japandroids, comes from combining two other ideas: Japanese Scream and Pleasure Droids.
Early Music Releases
The band first released two EPs (Extended Plays) on their own. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs. These were All Lies in 2007 and Lullaby Death Jams in 2008. Only 500 copies of each EP were made. Later, in 2010, these songs were re-released together as a collection called No Singles.
First Studio Album: Post-Nothing
Japandroids released their first full-length album, Post-Nothing, on April 28, 2009. It was first released by Unfamiliar Records. Later, it was re-released on August 4, 2009, by Polyvinyl Record Co..
In March 2009, a music website called Pitchfork Media highlighted their song "Young Hearts Spark Fire." They called it a 'Best New Track'. This helped the band become more well-known outside of Canada.
Second Studio Album: Celebration Rock
The band's second studio album, Celebration Rock, came out on June 5, 2012. The first song released from this album was "The House That Heaven Built" on May 15, 2012.
Celebration Rock received many good reviews. Pitchfork Media praised the band's lyrics, saying they made listeners "feel something." Spin magazine named Japandroids their 'Band of the Year' in 2012. They gave the album a high rating of 9 out of 10. Rolling Stone magazine rated it 4 out of 5 stars. They also put Celebration Rock at number 10 on their list of The 10 Coolest Summer Albums of All Time.
