Jared John Staal (born August 21, 1990) is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former player. He is the head coach for the Savannah Ghost Pirates team in the ECHL league. Before this, he was an assistant coach for the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Jared stopped playing hockey in 2017. His last team as a player was the Edinburgh Capitals in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Staal also played for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is the youngest of four brothers who all played professional hockey. His brothers are former players Eric Staal and Marc Staal, and Jordan Staal who plays for the Carolina Hurricanes. His cousin, Jeff Heerema, also played hockey.

Jared Staal's Playing Career

Early Hockey Days

Jared Staal grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He played 'AAA' hockey for the Thunder Bay Kings. In 2006, he was chosen in the first round of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft. The Sudbury Wolves picked him 11th overall.

Staal played the 2007–08 season with the Wolves. In 2008, the Phoenix Coyotes picked him in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft. He was the 49th player chosen overall. Jared is the only one of the four Staal brothers not picked in the first round. He is also the only one who shoots the puck with his right hand.

Moving to Professional Leagues

In April 2009, Staal signed a special contract with the San Antonio Rampage. This team was linked to the Coyotes in the AHL. He played five games for the Rampage in 2009. After that, he went back to play for the Sudbury Wolves.

In May 2010, the Carolina Hurricanes got his player rights from the Phoenix Coyotes. The Hurricanes then signed Staal to a three-year contract. For the 2010–11 season, he was sent to the Hurricanes' AHL team, the Charlotte Checkers. He later played for the Florida Everblades in the ECHL before returning to the Checkers. In 2012, he was loaned to the Providence Bruins, another AHL team.

NHL Debut and Later Years

After playing 52 games with the Charlotte Checkers in 2012–13, Staal made his NHL debut. This happened on April 25, 2013, with the Carolina Hurricanes. He played against the New York Rangers. In that game, he started on a forward line with his brothers Eric and Jordan.

After five seasons with the Hurricanes organization, Staal became a free agent. In October 2015, he signed with the Florida Everblades in the ECHL. He was then traded to the South Carolina Stingrays shortly after. In July 2016, Staal signed a one-year contract to play overseas. He joined the Edinburgh Capitals in the EIHL.

Jared Staal's Coaching Career

Starting as a Coach

In June 2018, Jared Staal stopped playing hockey. He then signed a contract to become an assistant coach. He joined OHA Edmonton, a team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

In August 2019, Staal became an assistant coach for the Orlando Solar Bears. This team is also in the ECHL. He was promoted to associate coach for the 2021–22 ECHL season. He stayed with the team until 2022.

Coaching in the AHL and ECHL

In August 2022, Staal was named an assistant coach for the AHL's Charlotte Checkers. He had played five seasons as a player with the Checkers between 2010 and 2015.

In May 2024, Staal was named the head coach of the Savannah Ghost Pirates. This team plays in the ECHL.
