Eric is the oldest of the famous Staal brothers. His brothers, Marc, Jordan, and Jared, also played professional hockey. Eric Staal is a special member of the Triple Gold Club. This means he won the Stanley Cup (with the Hurricanes in 2006). He also won the World Championships (2007) and an Olympic gold medal (2010) with Team Canada.

Early Life and Hockey Beginnings

Eric Staal was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. His parents, Henry and Linda Staal, were sod farmers. Eric started playing hockey when he was just four years old. He and his three younger brothers practiced on a home ice rink.

Eric looked up to hockey stars Joe Sakic and Wayne Gretzky. He chose his jersey number 12 because his dad wore it. His father played hockey for the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Eric played minor hockey in Thunder Bay. He led his Bantam team to a championship in 2000. After that, the Peterborough Petes picked him in the 2000 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) draft. He was the 13th player chosen overall.

In his first OHL season (2000–01), Eric scored 49 points. He improved his scoring each year. In his final OHL season, he led the Petes with 39 goals and 98 points. He was named to the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) First All-Star Team.
