Jaroslav Modrý (born February 27, 1971) is a former professional ice hockey player from the Czech Republic. He was a skilled defenseman who played for 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). After his long playing career, he became an ice hockey coach.
He is currently an assistant coach for the Springfield Thunderbirds. This team plays in the AHL, which is a league below the NHL.

Jaroslav Modrý's Hockey Journey
Starting His NHL Career
Jaroslav Modrý was chosen by the New Jersey Devils in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 179th player picked overall. Modrý played his first NHL game with the Devils during the 1993–94 season.
In July 1995, he was traded to the Ottawa Senators. A few months later, in March 1996, he was traded again. This time, he joined the Los Angeles Kings. With the Kings, Modrý started playing more often. He became a regular player in the NHL.
Becoming an All-Star Player
Modrý played his first full NHL season in 2000–01 with the Kings. The next season, 2001–02, was his best. He set new personal records for assists (38) and points (42). He also played in the NHL All-Star Game that year. In the 2002–03 season, he scored a career-high 13 goals.
Moving Teams and Returning Home
After the 2003–04 season, Modrý left the Kings. He signed with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he went back to the Czech Republic. He played for HC Liberec in the Czech Extraliga.
After just one season with Atlanta, Modrý was traded again. He went to the Dallas Stars in a deal that also involved Patrik Štefan. Modrý played half of the 2006–07 season with the Stars. Then, Dallas sent him back to the Kings. This trade happened so Dallas could get his former Kings teammate, Mattias Norström.
A year later, in the 2007–08 season, Modrý moved once more. The Kings traded him to the Philadelphia Flyers. He played his last NHL games with the Flyers.
Playing in the Czech Extraliga
Modrý left the NHL for good in 2008. He signed a two-year contract with HC Liberec in the Czech Extraliga. He became the team's captain when he arrived. However, he left the club at the end of that season. On May 1, 2009, Modrý signed with HC Plzeň. He continued to play in the Czech Extraliga until he retired in 2012.
Jaroslav Modrý's Coaching Career
After he stopped playing hockey, Jaroslav Modrý started coaching. From 2016 to 2021, he worked as a youth coach. He was part of the Los Angeles Kings organization. During this time, he also spent three seasons as an assistant coach. He coached the Ontario Reign, an AHL team.
Modrý then returned to his home country, the Czech Republic. He coached teams there, including HC Motor České Budějovice and HC Kometa Brno. In June 2024, he left his head coaching job in Brno. He said it was for family reasons. He then accepted an assistant coaching position with the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds.
