College Basketball Journey
Jarvis Hayes was born just five minutes before his twin brother, Jonas Hayes. They both went to Douglass High School in Atlanta. After high school, they started their college basketball careers at Western Carolina.
At Western Carolina, Jarvis made a big impact. He was the first freshman in 40 years to lead the Southern Conference in scoring. After one year, he moved to the University of Georgia.
At Georgia, Jarvis was named First Team All-SEC in both his second and third years. This was a special honor, as he was the first player from Georgia to achieve this since Dominique Wilkins in 1981–82. He also played incredibly well in important games. For example, he scored an average of 28.5 points per game during the two games Georgia played in the 2002 NCAA tournament.
Jarvis Hayes has a unique record: he led two different college conferences in scoring during his time in college.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing in the NBA
Jarvis Hayes was picked 10th in the 2003 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards. His role was to support Jerry Stackhouse and shoot from long range. In his first few games, he averaged 13.0 points and 4.3 rebounds.
He was the only Wizards player chosen for the Rookie-Sophomore challenge during the All-Star Weekend. Even though he missed 12 games due to injuries, he finished his first season with good stats. He averaged 9.6 points, started 42 games, and played about 29.2 minutes per game.
In his second season, Jarvis played well, averaging 10.2 points. However, he suffered a serious knee injury in February. He hoped it would heal without surgery, but it kept causing problems.
During his third season, his right knee, which had been fractured before, swelled up again. He had to miss the rest of the preseason games. Later, in December 2005, the knee fractured again, ending his season. He finally had surgery in February 2006 to fix it.
In the 2006–07 season, Jarvis played 81 games. He averaged 7.2 points and shot 36% from three-point range. In the playoffs, he started all four games against the Cavs, averaging 10.5 points. However, he wasn't quite the same player after his injuries.
After four years with the Wizards, Jarvis signed with the Detroit Pistons in August 2007. He became an important player for the Pistons, often coming off the bench to replace Tayshaun Prince. He averaged 6.7 points in about 15.7 minutes per game.
In July 2008, Hayes signed with the New Jersey Nets. He became the team's sixth man, meaning he was often the first player to come off the bench. He also learned to play the power forward position during this time. Jarvis Hayes played his last NBA game on April 9, 2010.
Playing in Europe
After his NBA career, Jarvis Hayes moved to Europe to play basketball. In January 2011, he joined the Turkish club Aliağa Petkim. Later that year, in July 2011, he signed a one-year deal with BC Krasnye Krylya Samara in Russia.
In February 2013, he played for the Israeli club Ironi Ashkelon. Then, on September 16, 2013, he signed a one-year deal with the Italian club Sidigas Avellino.
Qatari National Team
Jarvis Hayes became a citizen of Qatar. He now plays for the senior men's Qatari national basketball team. He led the Qatar team with 25 points in a big win against Hong Kong during the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship in the Philippines.
