College Basketball Journey
Jarvis Hayes was born just five minutes before his twin brother, Jonas Hayes. They both went to Douglass High School in Atlanta. After high school, Jarvis and Jonas first enrolled at Western Carolina University. There, Jarvis became the first freshman in 40 years to lead the Southern Conference in scoring. This means he scored more points than any other player in that conference.
After one year, he moved to the University of Georgia. During his sophomore and junior years, he was named First Team All-SEC. This is a big honor in college basketball. He was the first player from Georgia to get this award since Dominique Wilkins in 1981–82. Jarvis also played very well in important games. For example, he averaged 28.5 points per game in the two games Georgia played in the 2002 NCAA tournament.
Jarvis Hayes has a special record. He led two different college conferences in scoring during his time in college.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing in the NBA
The Washington Wizards chose Jarvis Hayes as the 10th pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He was meant to be a backup player. He would come off the bench to score points from long range. In his first three games, Hayes averaged 13.0 points and 4.3 rebounds. He played well despite missing 12 games due to injuries. In his first year, he averaged 9.6 points and started 42 games.
In his second season, Hayes continued to play well. He averaged 10.2 points per game. However, he suffered a knee injury during a game. This injury caused him to miss many games. He tried to recover without surgery for a year.
During his third season, his knee caused problems again. He had to leave a game in December 2005. His knee had fractured again, ending his season early. In February 2006, he finally had surgery on his knee.
For the 2006–07 season, Hayes played in 81 games. He averaged 7.2 points. He shot 41% overall and over 36% from three-point range. He also shot 84.5% from the free-throw line. Even though he scored 29 points in one game, he was not quite the same player after his injuries.
After four years with the Wizards, Hayes signed with the Detroit Pistons in August 2007. He became an important player for the Pistons. He was the main backup for starter Tayshaun Prince. He averaged 6.7 points in about 15.7 minutes per game. He also improved his shooting.
Hayes then signed with the New Jersey Nets in July 2008. He became the team's "sixth man." This means he was often the first player to come off the bench. He also learned to play the power forward position.
