Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Jason Aalon Butler was born and grew up in Inglewood, California. His father, Aalon Butler, was the lead singer of a soul music group called Aalon. His mother is from Scotland. Growing up with a Black father and a white mother, he sometimes found it hard to fit in with other kids at school.
Music was always a big part of his life. His father's career in soul music was a major influence. However, it was his uncle from Scotland who introduced him to rock music. He gave him albums by the bands Bush and Radiohead. Butler has said that Bush is still his favorite band. He was also inspired by performers like James Brown and Michael Jackson.
Music Career
The Band Letlive
In 2002, Butler formed the post-hardcore band Letlive with a group of friends. The band released four albums and was signed to the famous Epitaph Records label.
Butler wrote lyrics about his personal experiences. He said that he used his music to express feelings he couldn't say in any other way. The band's final album, If I’m The Devil, came out in 2016. In 2017, the band announced on social media that they were breaking up. By that time, Butler was the only original member left in the band.
The Band Fever 333
After Letlive ended, Butler started a new band called Fever 333 in 2017. He teamed up with guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta. Fever 333 is a rapcore band, which mixes rock music with rap.
Their first performance was a surprise show in a donut shop parking lot. The band uses their music to bring attention to issues of injustice. Their first album, Strength in Numb333rs, was released in 2019. The band then toured with other popular groups like Bring Me the Horizon and Thrice.
Other Projects
Gentlemen in Real Life Clothing
Butler started his own clothing brand called "Gentlemen in Real Life," or G.I.R.L. He has said he was always interested in fashion because he didn't have many nice clothes when he was young. The brand releases new items every week, including clothes and accessories. The goal of G.I.R.L. is to explore what it means to be a gentleman today.
333 Wreckords Crew
In 2019, Butler created his own record label called 333 Wreckords Crew. It is a non-profit label, which means it focuses on art and community rather than making money. Butler wanted to create a supportive place for artists who share a positive and progressive vision. Bands like Nova Twins have signed with the label.
Personal Life
Butler lives a straight edge lifestyle, which means he chooses not to use alcohol or other harmful substances. He has said that his energetic stage performances are a way for him to express strong emotions in a safe way.
In 2014, Butler married Gin Wigmore, a musician from New Zealand. They have two sons. Their first son, Pascal, was born in 2017, and their second son was born in 2020.
