Jasper Peak is a mountain located in northeastern Minnesota, not far from the town of Soudan. This peak gets its name from the beautiful red rock called jasper, which makes up most of the mountain. At the very top of Jasper Peak, there is an old lookout tower. This tower was built in 1934 by the Minnesota Division of Forestry to help spot forest fires.
The Mountain's Original Name
Jasper Peak was not always known by its current name. It was once called Chester Peak. This name honored a man named Albert Huntington Chester. He was a smart scientist and professor who studied chemistry, minerals, and metals.
Professor Chester taught at Hamilton College from 1870 to 1891, and later at Rutgers University. He was very important for his work in mapping the Mesabi and Vermilion Iron Ranges in Minnesota. These areas are famous for their rich iron ore deposits. His detailed survey was published in 1882 by the Minnesota Geological Survey, which is a group that studies the geology of Minnesota.
