Jasper Stuyven (born 17 April 1992) is a professional racing cyclist from Belgium. He rides for the Lidl–Trek team. Jasper is known as a "classics specialist." This means he is very good at winning tough, one-day races.

He has won some big races, like the 2021 Milan–San Remo, which is one of cycling's most famous "monuments." He also won the 2020 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the 2016 Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne. Jasper has also done well in longer stage races. He won the overall title at the 2019 Deutschland Tour and a stage in the 2015 Vuelta a España. He has raced in the Tour de France six times, often finishing near the top in different stages.

Jasper's Cycling Journey

Starting Young

Jasper Stuyven was born in Leuven, Belgium. He was a very successful young rider. In 2009, when he was just 17, he won the Junior World Road Race Championships. This was a huge win for him! In 2010, he won more races, including the famous Paris-Roubaix Juniors race.

Turning Professional

Jasper started his professional career at age 20 with the Bontrager–Livestrong team. He quickly showed his talent, winning four races with them. One of his early victories was the Volta ao Alentejo.

Riding for Trek Factory Racing (2014–Present)

First Grand Tour Race

In 2014, Jasper joined the Trek Factory Racing team. He was 22 years old. That year, he raced in his first "Grand Tour," which is a very long, multi-stage race. It was the Vuelta a España. He finished fourth in three different stages.

First Grand Tour Stage Win

In 2015, Jasper achieved his biggest win yet. He won Stage 8 of the Vuelta a España. He won in a sprint finish against other riders. Sadly, he crashed earlier in that stage. He had to leave the race after his win because he broke his wrist.

Winning a Classic Race

In 2016, Jasper won the Belgian one-day race Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne. He rode away from everyone else for the last 17 kilometers of the race! He also finished fifth in the E3 Harelbeke. That year, he raced in the Tour de France. He even wore the polka-dot jersey for two days, which means he was leading the "mountains classification."

Close Finishes and New Races

In 2017, Jasper was part of the leading group in Paris–Roubaix, finishing fourth. He also rode in the Giro d'Italia. In one stage, he finished second after being in a breakaway for almost the entire 217-kilometer race!

More Top Finishes

In 2018, Jasper placed in the top 10 in many "spring classics" races. He was 4th in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and 5th in Paris–Roubaix. In the Tour de France, he almost won Stage 14. He was caught near the end but still won the "combativity award" for being the most aggressive rider. Later that year, he won two races in Belgium: the Grand Prix de Wallonie and the Grote Prijs Jef Scherens in his hometown of Leuven.

Overall Race Victory

In 2019, Jasper won the overall title at the Deutschland Tour. He took the lead on Stage 3 and held onto it. He also had several top-ten finishes in other races that autumn.

Strong Start to 2020

Jasper had a fantastic start to the 2020 season. He won the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, beating another Belgian rider in a sprint. The next day, he finished fifth in Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne.

Winning a Monument Race

On March 20, 2021, Jasper won the Milan-San Remo. This was his first "Monument" victory, which is a huge achievement in cycling! He attacked on the final climb, the Poggio, and held off the chasing group to win by a tiny margin. It was a thrilling finish!

Life Outside Cycling

Jasper went to school at Sint-Pieterscollege in Leuven. When he's not cycling, he has a special hobby. He and his uncle Ivan, who is a skilled chocolatier, own a small chocolate shop. It's called Chocolade Atelier Stuyven and opened in 2016. They often make chocolates shaped like cycling items!
