Jean-Baptiste Isabey (born April 11, 1767 – died April 18, 1855) was a famous French painter. He was born in Nancy.

He was a very successful artist. He worked for important leaders during the First French Empire and for diplomats at the Congress of Vienna.

Life of a Royal Painter

At 19 years old, Jean-Baptiste Isabey began his art training. He first learned from Dumont, who was a miniature painter for Queen Marie Antoinette. Later, Isabey became a student of the well-known artist Jacques-Louis David.

Isabey worked at the Palace of Versailles, where he painted portraits of young princes. Queen Marie Antoinette gave him his first important job. From then on, many French rulers hired him for their art projects until he passed away in 1855.

Working for Emperors and Kings

Empress Josephine and Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte were big supporters of Isabey's art. He even helped plan the grand ceremonies for their coronation. He also created drawings for a special book that officially remembered the event. Later, King Louis XVIII paid him for this work and for painting his own portrait in 1814.

Even after Napoleon returned from exile, Isabey continued to work for him. He also kept the favor of the next rulers and helped arrange the coronation of King Charles X.

Later Years and Recognition

During the time of the July Monarchy, Isabey received an important job. He was put in charge of the royal art collections. Later, Emperor Napoleon III gave him a regular payment called a pension. He also awarded Isabey the high honor of being a commander of the Legion of Honor.

Some of Isabey's most famous paintings include Review of Troops by the First Consul. Another popular work was Isabey's Boat, a charming drawing of himself and his family. This drawing was very popular at an art show in 1820. His portrait of Napoleon at Malmaison is thought to be one of the best ever made of Napoleon. Even his tiny painting of the King of Rome's head, made for a pin, showed his skill as a master artist.

Family and Legacy

A book about Isabey's life was written by Edmond Taigny in 1859. Another article about him was based on information from his family.

Isabey's son, Eugène, also became a well-known painter, following in his father's footsteps.
