Why Canada Placed Sanctions

On November 17, 2022, the Government of Canada took action against Jean Henry Céant. They placed special rules, called sanctions, on him. These sanctions were also placed on former president Michel Martelly and former prime minister Laurent Lamothe.

Canada explained that these actions were taken because Mr. Céant was accused of serious issues. He was suspected of being involved in actions that harmed people in Haiti. Specifically, he was accused of helping groups that caused trouble. These groups were said to make people in Haiti feel unsafe. The office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Mr. Céant was suspected of protecting and helping illegal activities by these groups.
