Jack Guy Lafontant was born on April 4, 1961. He is a politician from Haiti. He served as the Prime Minister of Haiti from March 21, 2017, until September 16, 2018.
Early Life and Education
Jack Guy Lafontant studied medicine. He became a specialist in two areas:
- Gastroenterology: This branch of medicine deals with the digestive system.
- Internal medicine: This focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating adult diseases.
After his studies, he became a university teacher. He was also a member of important medical groups, including the Haitian Medical Association. He also joined the American College of Gastroenterology.
Political Career
Before entering politics, Lafontant was active in community service. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Pétion-Ville, a city near Port-au-Prince. In 2016, he served as the president of this group.
On February 22, 2017, Jack Guy Lafontant was chosen to be the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in Haiti. He then introduced the people who would work with him in his government, called his cabinet.
His government needed approval from the Haitian Parliament. This Parliament has two parts:
- The Senate
- The Chamber of Deputies
Both parts of the Parliament voted to approve his government. The Senate approved it on March 16. The Chamber of Deputies approved it on March 21. He officially started his job as Prime Minister on the same day his government received this approval. This was his first time holding a political office.
In July 2018, there were many protests in Haiti. These protests were against a government plan to increase the price of fuel. On July 14, 2018, Lafontant announced that he had resigned from his position. President Moïse accepted his resignation. The President then began looking for a new Prime Minister for Haiti.
