History of the University
The university's story began in the 1820s. Back then, it was just a few separate schools. These included colleges for medicine and law.
In 1942, these different schools joined together. They formed what was then called the University of Haiti.
Later, in 1960, the government took more control. They renamed it the State University of Haiti. However, in 1983, the university became independent. This means it could make its own decisions. This independence was confirmed again in Haiti's constitution in 1987.
Student Life and Learning
In 1981, about 4,099 students attended the university. Many studied law, economics, medicine, or pharmacy. Other popular subjects included administration and science. Even though farming is important in Haiti, only a small number of students studied agriculture.
At that time, the university had 559 professors. Most of them worked part-time. This meant they had less time to spend with students. The university also faced challenges. It had a shortage of books and other learning materials.
Cost and Admission
As of 2010, the tuition fee was about US$15 per year. This made it much more affordable than other colleges in Haiti. However, getting into the university was very competitive.
Only about 15% of students who applied were accepted. For example, the dentistry school had only 20 spots. But about 800 students applied for those spots each year!
Notable People and Impact
One famous person who was a leader (rector) of the university was the writer Jean Price Mars.
The university's buildings were badly damaged in a big earthquake. This happened on January 12, 2010. After the earthquake, many groups helped. A group of colleges in the United States worked together to help rebuild parts of the campus.
The government of the Dominican Republic also helped a lot. They paid to build a brand new university campus. This new campus is near the town of Limonade in northern Haiti. It is called the Université d'État d'Haïti, Campus Henri Christophe de Limonade.
University Publishing House
The university also has its own publishing house. It is called Éditions de l'Université d'État d'Haïti. It started in 2006. Its main goal is to share new research and scientific writings. It also publishes books to help students and teachers.
The publishing house prints many types of books. These include research papers and important historical writings from Haiti. By 2014, it had published 70 academic books.
