Jacques-Édouard Alexis was born on September 21, 1947. He is a politician from Haiti. He served as the Prime Minister of Haiti two times. His first term was from 1999 to 2001. His second term was from 2006 to 2008. He was removed from his position during his second term because of problems caused by high food prices.

Early Life and Education
Jacques-Édouard Alexis was born in Gonaïves, Haiti. His family has a history in Haitian leadership. He is the great-great grandson of a former president, Pierre Nord Alexis.
He went to school in Gonaïves and later in Port-au-Prince. In 1973, he earned a degree in agricultural engineering from the State University of Haiti. This means he studied how to use science and technology to improve farming.
His Career in Education
After finishing his studies, Alexis worked as a teacher and researcher.
- He was an assistant professor of chemistry at the State University of Haiti.
- He also studied and taught at Université Laval in Canada. There, he earned a Master's degree in food science and technology. This field focuses on how food is made, stored, and kept safe.
- He became a professor of food technology back at the State University of Haiti.
- He also taught about human nutrition.
- From 1985 to 1987, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine. This is like being the head of a department at a university.
- He helped start Quisqueya University and was its first leader, called a rector, from 1990 to 1995.
Government Roles Before Prime Minister
Before becoming Prime Minister, Jacques-Édouard Alexis held important roles in the Haitian government. He worked under President René Préval.
- From 1996 to 1999, he was the Minister of National Education, Youth, and Sport. This means he was in charge of schools, youth programs, and sports.
- He also served as the Minister of Culture and the Minister of the Interior.
Serving as Prime Minister
Jacques-Édouard Alexis served as Prime Minister of Haiti twice. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in many countries.
First Term as Prime Minister
President Préval first chose Alexis to be Prime Minister in 1998. It took some time for him to be officially approved by the Haitian Parliament. There were political disagreements at the time.
He officially became Prime Minister on March 26, 1999. He served in this role until February 7, 2001.
Second Term as Prime Minister
President Préval was re-elected in 2006. He again nominated Jacques-Édouard Alexis to be Prime Minister. This time, Parliament approved him almost completely.
Alexis and his government took office on June 9, 2006. His government was made up of several political parties working together. His main goals were to make the country safer and provide basic services to people. These services include things like clean water and electricity.
Why He Resigned
People started to criticize Alexis's plans for the economy. In February 2008, he faced a vote to remove him, but he kept his job.
However, in April 2008, there were protests because food prices were very high. Alexis announced a plan to try and lower the cost of living. But many people felt his ideas were not enough.
On April 10, 2008, many Senators in Haiti asked Alexis to resign. They felt his government was not doing enough to help people. On April 12, the Senate voted to remove him from office. President Préval said that Alexis had done his best.
