Jean-Jacques Beineix (born 8 October 1946 – died 13 January 2022) was a French film director. He was most famous for his movies Diva and Betty Blue. His films are great examples of a movie style called cinéma du look.

Early Life and Education
Jean-Jacques Beineix was born in Paris, France. His father, Robert Beineix, was in charge of an insurance company. Jean-Jacques went to two well-known schools in Paris, Lycée Carnot and Lycée Condorcet.
After finishing high school, he started studying medicine. However, he left medical school after the big student protests in May 1968. He then tried to get into a famous film school in Paris, but he didn't get in.
Filmmaking Career
Jean-Jacques Beineix started working in movies in 1964. He was an assistant director for a popular French TV show called Les Saintes chériesClaude Berri and Claude Zidi. In 1972, he was a second assistant director for the movie The Day the Clown Cried.

In 1977, Beineix directed his first short movie, Le Chien de M. Michel. It won an award at the Trouville Festival. In 1980, he made his first full-length movie, Diva. This movie won four César Awards, which are like the French Oscars. Diva was also shown at the 12th Moscow International Film Festival.
Diva is seen as the first movie of a new style called cinéma du look. This style focused on movies for young people that looked very good. These films used bright colors and special lighting effects. They were often filmed in studios and looked amazing, usually telling romantic stories. Other directors like Luc Besson and Léos Carax also made films in this style.
His second movie, Moon in the Gutter, was nominated for the Palme d'Or award at the 1983 Cannes Festival. It won one César Award for its amazing set design.
Betty Blue and Later Works
In 1986, Beineix directed Betty Blue (its original French title was 37°2 le matin). This movie starred Béatrice Dalle and Jean-Hugues Anglade. In 1987, Betty Blue was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It also won awards at the Montréal World Film Festival and from the Boston Society of Film Critics.
Beineix continued to direct movies, including Roselyne et les lions in 1989, IP5: L'île aux pachydermes
in 1992, and Mortel Transfert in 2001. In 1992, he won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Director at the Seattle International Film Festival for both Betty Blue and IP5: L'île aux pachydermes.In 1984, Jean-Jacques Beineix started his own production company called Cargo Films. He wanted to have more control over his artistic work. Betty Blue was the first movie made by Cargo Films. His company makes feature films and documentaries about many different topics, from science to art, and even social issues. He worked with science groups like CNES and CNRS to make documentaries.
Personal Life
Jean-Jacques Beineix was married to his wife, Agnès. He had a daughter named Frida from an earlier relationship with actress Valentina Sauca.
In 2006, he wrote the first part of his life story, called Les Chantiers de la gloire.
Beineix passed away from a type of cancer called leukaemia at his home in Paris on 13 January 2022. He was 75 years old.
