Jean Baptist fought in major conflicts like the Great Turkish War and the War of the Spanish Succession. He was known for his military skills and later for his work as a diplomat.

Who Was Jean Baptist?

Jean Baptist was born around 1650. His father, Prosper, Graf von Arco, was also a high-ranking general. In 1680, Jean Baptist married Ursula von Berndorff. He spent most of his life serving the Bavarian state.

A Life in the Army

Jean Baptist joined the Bavarian army in 1672. He later served the Holy Roman Empire for a few years. By 1683, he was back with the Bavarian army. He became a colonel, leading a group of soldiers on horseback called cuirassiers.

He became well-known for his bravery in the Great Turkish War. He helped fight in the Battle of Vienna in 1683. This battle was a big victory for the European armies against the Ottoman Empire. He also helped take back the city of Belgrade in 1688.

In 1696, he became the President of the Hofkriegsrat. This was like being the head of the war council for Bavaria. It meant he was in charge of military planning and decisions.

Fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession

When the War of the Spanish Succession began, Jean Baptist was called back to lead troops. He was promoted to field marshal in 1702. This was a very high rank in the army.

He was sent to defend the important town of Donauwörth. Here, he faced a strong attack from Allied troops. These troops were led by famous generals like John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. In the Battle of Schellenberg in 1704, Jean Baptist's army was defeated. Many of his soldiers were lost.

Later that year, he fought in the huge Battle of Blenheim. He commanded the Bavarian cavalry, which are soldiers on horseback. He fought bravely against Prince Eugene of Savoy's forces. However, the French army on his side was defeated, and he had to retreat.

Jean Baptist then went with the Elector of Bavaria to the Netherlands. He fought in another major battle, the Battle of Ramillies, in 1706. After this battle, he returned to Bavaria.

A Diplomat Too!

Besides being a skilled general, Count d'Arco was also an important diplomat. He strongly supported Bavaria's friendship with France. Because of this, he was given the special title of Marshal of France.

He was sent on several important missions to England. These missions involved talking with leaders from other countries. He worked to build good relationships between Bavaria and other nations. Jean Baptist, Comte d'Arco, passed away in 1715 in Munich.
