Jean Paul Pierre Casimir-Perier (born 8 November 1847 – died 11 March 1907) was a French politician. He served as the fifth President of the French Third Republic.

Early Life and Family Background

Jean Casimir-Perier was born in Paris, France. His family was well-known in French politics. His father, Auguste Casimir-Perier, was a minister. His grandfather, Casimir Pierre Perier, had even served as a prime minister under King Louis Philippe I.

Jean Casimir-Perier began his public career working as a secretary for his father. At that time, his father was the Minister of the Interior, serving under President Adolphe Thiers.

Steps in His Political Career

Casimir-Perier steadily moved up in the world of French politics.

Becoming a Key Figure

In 1883, he took on the role of under-secretary of state for war. He held this important position for about two years. Later, from 1890 to 1892, he became the vice-president of the French Chamber of Deputies. This is like being the assistant leader of the main law-making body. In 1893, he was elected president of the Chamber.

Serving as Prime Minister

In December 1893, Jean Casimir-Perier became the Prime Minister of France. He also served as the Foreign Minister at the same time. However, he resigned from these roles in May 1894. After resigning, he was re-elected as president of the Chamber of Deputies.

President of France

Jean Casimir-Perier became President of France in a surprising way.

Election to the Presidency

On 24 June 1894, the previous president, Marie François Sadi Carnot, was sadly assassinated. After this event, Casimir-Perier was elected President of the French Republic. He won with 451 votes.

A Short Term in Office

His time as president was very short, lasting only six months. He resigned on 14 January 1895. Casimir-Perier explained that he felt ignored by his ministers. He said they didn't ask for his opinion before making decisions. He also felt they didn't keep him updated on important political events, especially those involving other countries.

Life After Politics

After leaving the presidency, Jean Casimir-Perier completely stepped away from politics. He chose to focus on business instead, especially in the mining industry.

He later played a small but important part in the famous Dreyfus Affair. This was a major political scandal in France. Casimir-Perier's testimony helped show the truth in the case.
