Jean Douchet (19 January 1929 – 22 November 2019) was a French film director, historian, film critic, and teacher. He started his career in the early 1950s. He worked for film magazines like Gazette du Cinéma and Cahiers du cinéma. He was part of a group that later became known as the French New Wave in cinema.

His Life and Work

Jean Douchet was a journalist who wrote a lot about filmmakers. He focused on directors from the New Wave movement. He also wrote about famous directors like Alfred Hitchcock and Jean-Luc Godard. He helped other film critics, like Serge Daney, start their careers.

Douchet also acted in small roles in films. He worked with directors such as Godard, François Truffaut, and Jacques Rivette. He taught at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques, a famous film school. Some of his students later became well-known directors themselves, like François Ozon.

He was also involved with the Cinémathèque Française, which is a French film archive and museum. He often hosted film screenings and special events there. In 2010, he made a short documentary called Claude et Éric. This film was an interview with Claude Chabrol about the early days of another director, Éric Rohmer.

Jean Douchet passed away on 22 November 2019, at the age of 90. The Cinémathèque Française announced his death.
