Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet (born May 1, 1644 – died April 5, 1717) was a famous French painter. He was especially known for his religious paintings.

Life as an Artist

Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet was born in Rouen, France. He came from a family of artists. His father, Laurent Jouvenet, taught him how to paint. Jean-Baptiste showed great talent for art very early on.

When he moved to Paris, a very important artist named Charles Le Brun noticed him. Le Brun hired Jouvenet to work at the famous Palace of Versailles. There, Jouvenet helped decorate rooms like the Salon de Mars.

In 1675, Jouvenet became a member of the Académie royale. This was a royal art school. He later became a professor there in 1681. By 1707, he was one of the four main leaders of the Academy. He also worked on projects at places like Les Invalides and Grand Trianon.

His Art Style

Jouvenet created many artworks, mostly in Paris. Many of his famous paintings, like Miraculous Draught of Fishes, are now in the Louvre Museum. His paintings show how creative and skilled he was.

His art often had a grand and dignified style. This was typical of the art school led by Le Brun. Some art experts say Jouvenet's style reminded them of older masters like Nicolas Poussin and Raphael.

However, Jouvenet also added a strong emotional feeling to his work. This is part of the Baroque art style. His paintings often showed scenes with strong feelings and movement. He also used a very realistic style. This made his religious paintings stand out from others of his time.

Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet died on April 5, 1717. For the last four years of his life, he had to paint with his left hand because of paralysis.
